Welcome Aboard!

Bishop Clarence (Larry) Silva, who supports and has much aloha for deacons, welcomes you to Hawaii.

It's time for Deacons to meet together again. We haven't had a national Catholic Diaconate Conference since the Baltimore conference in 2004. With the demise of the Bishop's Committee on the Diaconate it is more important for deacons to meet more frequently. To meet this need, the Pacific Catholic Diaconate Conference (PCDC)  invites all deacons to meet and exchange their experiences and Aloha. We have an exciting program and opportunities to meet in small groups to discuss what is on our minds. After surveying deacons and analyzing the possibilities, it is clear that the best venue for the conference is aboard the vessel Pride of America.    It has good meeting facilities and gives deacons and their spouses the opportunity to visit the major Hawaii Islands at a lower cost than a land based conference. The conference is scheduled for October 25-November 1, 2008.  All standard meals, entertainment, and ship facilities are included in the price of the cabins.  Book early for current prices and cabin selection.

A brief background on some of our program participants:

Bishop Silva is a pastoral bishop having served in the trenches as a pastor for many years. As Vicar General of the Oakland Diocese he was a great supporter of deacons and to show their support many Oakland deacons came to his ordination as Bishop of Honolulu. He is particularly interested in the Social Justice role of the deacon.

Deacon/Dr. Ray R. Noll has just retired as a full professor of Theology and Church History from the University of San Francisco. His most recent courses have been in Christology, Church and Sacraments and Christian Marriage. His latest book Sacraments: A New Understanding for a New Generation is in its 4th printing. He teaches in the diaconate programs for the dioceses of Santa Rosa and San Francisco. He has partnered with his wife Dr. Jean M. Noll in conducting retreats for deacons in various dioceses. Dr. Jean Noll holds a doctorate in Education: Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco.

Rev./Dr. John Keenan, SSS, has doctorates in Theology and Psychology. He is a practicing Psychologist and serves at St Ann's Parish, Kaneohe, HI.  He is a linguist and can speak a number of languages including Russian, French, Chinese and Hawaiian. He is the Coordinator for the Chinese Catholic Community for the Diocese of Honolulu and a sought-after speaker.
